The first ever Spotify Awards, based entirely on user-generated data collected from Spotify users in Mexico, took place earlier this month in Mexico City. What does that mean? Well, the awards ceremony awarded artists for fan streaming choices. Winners were determined based on the user’s listening patterns and habits — including what they were streaming and how often they were streaming. The awards acknowledged the artists, songs, and albums fans were excited about on Spotify. The ceremony took place in the “streaming capital of the world” also known as Mexico City, the city that actually has the most listeners globally.
Following a massive release that landed No.1 in over 16 territories, it’s no surprise that BTS won Most Listened K-Pop Artist. Their fourth studio album MAP OF THE SOUL : 7 is already one of the best selling global albums this year.
Regional Mexican act Los Ángeles Azules were formed in the 1980s and quickly became a chart-topping act — now Most Listened Corridos Artist on Spotify. Los Ángeles Azules are an inspiration to global composers around the world, leading in the Cumbia genre, blending multiple styles including pop, folklore, and electronic sounds while using accordions and synthesizers. Listen to “Y la Hice Llorar ft. Abel Pintos.”
Congrats to The Orchard’s distributed artists who made streaming history at the first ever Spotify Awards and cheers to all the nominees!
