The Golden Melody Awards, comparable to the GRAMMYs in the United States, is awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan to recognize the talent and achievements among the popular and traditional music industry. First held in 1990, the awards are awarded on the basis of votes by a jury. The 31st edition of the Golden Melody Awards will present the winners on October 3, 2020 at the Taipei Music Center.
Deemed rock and roll’s one and only, Naiwen Yang is a Taiwanese musician who grew up in Sydney, Australia. Her recent album The More Beautiful, The More Invisible has showcased her powerful vocals, deserving of the nomination for this year’s Golden Music Awards’ Best Female Mandarin Singer. As her bio reads, “Naiwen Yang’s brave voice stands out against the struggle, reminding us music quenches our thirst for tranquility.” Her music and art stands for internationalization, crossing barriers, and independence. Since 1997, Naiwen has been awarded for her album releases, winning the Best Female Singer of Golden Melody Awards in 2000.
anpu, also known as Zhang Xuan, became one of this generation’s most recognizable female singers. Known for her distinct lyrics, her work has been honored with various music awards over the years. According to mulii, “Anpu continues following her true instincts and revelations in each stage of her life. She always challenges herself with innovative art forms and visual and aural interpretations. Recently, she has pivoted her attention from self-expression to focusing on the relation between humanity and nature, and agendas relevant to public interest.”
