The Orchard Team Takes 2022 Juno Awards

The Orchard Team Takes 2022 Juno Awards

The Canadian music community came together this weekend as the 2022 Juno Awards took place in downtown Toronto. The broadcasted show on Sunday was hosted by Toronto-based actor Simu Liu live from the Budweiser Stage. The Orchard team was thrilled to join Juno week this year – the first time the award show has been in-person since 2019. Congratulations to our distributed artists and partners on ten wins!

Charlotte Cardin went into the evening the big contender and came out just the same. Cardin received the most nominations of any artist for the 2022 Juno Awards and took home four awards: Artist of the Year, Single Of The Year, Album of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year. The singer-songwriter’s debut album Phoenix (Cult Nation) spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart.

Phoenix is the first debut album to receive an Album of the Year Juno Award for the first time since 2005. Cardin is also the first female artist to win Artist of the Year in eight years, and the first female solo artist to win ‘Single Of The Year For A Solo Recording (Not A Collab)’ in nine years. Throughout the evening, Cardin was accepting Junos left and right and also took to the stage to perform her ‘Single of the Year’ “Meaningless.”

Toronto-born poet, singer, and filmmaker Mustafa was another performer of the evening. In 2021, Mustafa released his highly-acclaimed debut album When Smoke Rises. The body of work reflects the process of mourning, as Mustafa remembers loved ones lost due to violence. Mustafa began his Juno Awards performance of “Stay Alive” only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, but halfway through was joined by a choir of friends. His album When Smoke Rises (Regent Park Songs) was awarded Alternative Album Of The Year.
