Jump right into the weekend with new releases from some of our favorite artists! This week’s Out Today highlights releases from Icelandic songwriter Ásgeir, rising singer/songwriter Aubrie Sellers, and electronic duo Frere.
Ásgeir, Bury The Moon/Sátt (One Little Indian/Records Records)
Ásgeir’s latest album starts with heartbreak and the need to escape. After his relationship came to an end, Ásgeir had to get away and escaped into the Icelandic countryside with just his guitar, keyboard, and small recording setup. Here, on the cold, rural island, he pondered love and loss and put all these emotions into his music. He called on fellow travelers and guest lyricists to gather inspiration for his work. The 11-song album combines a personal, bruising, and hard-hitting emotional experience with beautiful folk notes and deep electronics. Bury The Moon/Sátt sees Ásgeir’s lyrics translated by American songwriter and Reykjavik resident John Grant, but the soothing and silvery voice remains the same. He describes this album simply, as “honest songs with strong melodies and lyrics.” Experience the trials and triumphs of love on Bury The Moon/Sátt, out now!
Aubrie Sellers, Far From Home (Soundly Music)
Aubrie Sellers isn’t afraid to stray from the norm in this quick-take world. She has self-defined her style as raw and grungy, making her an outlier in today’s music scene. Sellers’ sophomore album is for everyone who never felt like they fit in, which is reflected in the music. Music came naturally to Sellers, as she grew up surrounded by it, but she decided that her sound would differ from those of her singer/songwriter parents, Lee Ann Womack and Jason Sellers. Seller’s sophomore album Far From Home tells the story of a young Nashville-Los Angeles transplant looking to find herself in a world that is new to her. Sellers’ musical range is on display on this album, with heartfelt ballads like “Far From Home” and crushing garage-country hits like “Glad.” Lyrically, it tells a story of a young lost Nashville-Los Angeles transplant, but musically it shows how she has stayed true to her roots. Vividly feel her emotions and listen to Far From Home now.
Frere – Big Hug (Monday Records)
