It’s been a long-time coming and after slowly building our presence in the region — opening an office in Singapore, attending conferences like last week’s Music Matters, building partnerships and relationships — we’ve signed a deal with Taihe Music Group that will change the game.
Through our exclusive partnership, all of The Orchard’s music will be distributed to local Chinese stores and services including Ali Music, Kugou, Kuwo, NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music and Baidu Music, among others. In addition, Taihe Music Group’s catalog — which features top C-Pop artists like Chen Jieyi (陈洁仪), Xu Song (许嵩), Fang Datong (方大同) and Zhang Shaohan (张韶涵) — will be distributed everywhere outside of China through The Orchard.
This is very exciting for several reasons: first and foremost, it means our clients’ music reaches a whole new audience that has until now been largely untapped. China has 1.38 billion people who currently only contribute about 1% of global annual recorded music revenue. Second, it makes The Orchard one of the most extensive distributors of Chinese labels outside of China. We take on that responsibility with pride. Third, it connects us with a company we hold in very high regard. Taihe Music Group is the largest label group and music service provider in China, representing top labels like Taihe Rye Music and Ocean Butterflies Music, as well as Touch Music Publishing. They have the same commitment we do to serving the independent community; it’s a partnership made in heaven.
