New York went back to its moody weather after two days of sunshine. But before you put your raincoats back on, we have some great releases to lengthen the spring vibes the city has teased. This week’s albums will take you on a journey back to the 70’s New York punk-rock scene, 80’s dance floors and landing on some emotional folk-rock tunes, all out today.
Strange Names challenges its audience to “explore humanity from an outside perspective” with their brand new album Data. Represented by Frenchkiss Records, Strange Names has been working on Data since they have finished touring with Azealia Banks in 2015. The new-wave trio presents funky drum beats and guitar riffs that follow melodic and pulsated synthesizers that pay tribute to 80’s pop/rock records, with tracks that best serve the dance floor. The whimsical music video “UFO” creates an imagery of three out-of-the-world figures landing on earth and observing human behaviors in a playful way. Holly Miranda’s fourth solo album Mutual Horse by Dangerbird Records shines with impressive collaborations that support Miranda’s captive voice throughout the album. Dedicating the album to her mother that past away a month before today, the NYC based singer-songwriter reinvents herself through Mutual Horse, stating “It’s by far the most I’ve ever stepped out of my comfort zone in the recording process and also the most soul-baring album I’ve ever made.” TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone joins Miranda as a co-writer and on vocals for the first single of the album “Exquisite.” The song is about Miranda and Malone’s longtime friendship. New York City based post-punk band Public Access T.V. release their third album Street Safari via Cinematic Records. Produced by Patrick Wimberly (Beyonce, MGMT, Blood Orange), Street Safari is a reflection of PATV’s story; a group of friends dropping out of high school and moving to New York to pursue their dreams of making music. Greeted by New York with immense press and record label attention, sold out shows and festival appearances, the group even witnessed their house burn down adding to the list of many unreal encounters. The music video for “Metrotech,” also has an interesting backstory. The group shared with Dork that, “Max (bassist from PATV) met Kevin (featured actor in “Metrotech”) randomly while day-drinking alone at some dive bar. Kevin was there by himself as well and eventually they started talking and spent the rest of the day hanging at this bar.
