Welcome to Throwback Thursdays, a monthly spotlight on a gem from The Orchard catalog that was released a long, long time ago.
Album: The World Of Cecil Taylor
Artist: Cecil Taylor
Released: 1960
Genre: Jazz
April is Jazz Appreciation Month! Avant-garde piano legend Cecil Taylor, who celebrated his 88th birthday on March 25th, is still active and “a force of nature…with a furious attack and a sound all his own.” [Tom Vitale, NPR] New York Times declares him as “one of the great American artists of the past century.” This five-song set, featuring Archie Shepp on tenor sax, was recorded for the NYC (now UK) label Candid Records just months from his sessions with John Coltrane, Gil Evans, and Steve Lacy. The World of Cecil Taylor is “a wonderful document from early in Taylor’s career, when he was midway between modernist approaches to standard material and his own radical experiments that would come to full fruition a few years hence…a classic recording that belongs in anyone’s collection.” [Brian Olewnick, Allmusic]
Since 2013, The Orchard has distributed Candid digitally, including vintage gems from Booker Little, Clark Terry, and Phil Woods to contemporary artists like Stacey Kent, Kyle Eastwood and Clare Teal.
