RJD2‘s new album Dame Fortune is the sound of the future. Out today via RJ’s Electrical Connections, the veteran producer’s latest production showcases an eclectic sound you don’t want to miss. With a career spanning over 20 years, RJD2 successfully fuses genres such as soul, funk and electronic music all at the same time.
Each track off Dame Fortune transports the listener to a different setting. Opening the record with “A Portal Inward,” this song serves to set the scene for the musical journey to come. Through its use of synth, chordal dissonance and varying rhythms, “A Portal Inward” provides the blueprint for the rest of RJD2‘s music.
Dame Fortune was recorded over the course of a year in Philadelphia and its musical influences are evident in groovy tracks such as “The Sheboygan Left” and “The Roaming Heard” — both incorporate a funky bass line and big-band sound. Collaborations with vocalist Son Little in “We Come Alive” and “Saboteur,” featuring R&B singer/rapper Phonte Coleman, also offer listeners the chance to hear refreshing vocals over RJ‘s complex beats.
Adding to the visual aspect of his music, the interactive splash page you’ll find on RJD2’s website, designed in-house by The Orchard’s amazing Design Team, presents a steering wheel on a highway that drives forward as you scroll.
