On Sunday evening, the JUNO Awards were held in Halifax, Nova Scotia to celebrate Canadian music. Hosted by Nelly Furtado, the ceremony was full of incredible up-and-coming artists and legends of the industry. Congratulations to our distributed artists and labels on 5 wins!
Charlotte Cardin (Cult Nation) won both Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year for her album 99 Nights. Based in Montreal, Cardin has had a year to remember — hitting No. 3 on the Billboard Canadian Album charts for 99 Nights and reaching Top 10 of the Canadian Hot 100 list for her single “Confetti.” She performed the song during the ceremony, highlighting her combination of pop and electronic sound.
Elisapie (Bonsound) took home Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year for her album Inuktitut. Born in Salluit, Quebec, Elisapie is an Inuk singer-songwriter. Her award-winning album contains pop and rock songs from the ’60s to the ‘90s, translated into Inuktitut. She won her first JUNO Award in 2005 with her band Taima and released her first solo album, There Will Be Stars, in 2010. Elisapie joined fiddler Morgan Toney and singer-songwriter Jeremy Dutcher on stage for a live performance medley of “Honor Song,” “Skicinuwihkuk” and “Uummati Attanarsimat” — the latter being Elisapie’s Inuktitut version of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.”
