Allman Brothers Band – CREAM OF THE CROP 2003 – HIGHLIGHTS, 2003 (Peach Records)

A collection of the best Allman Brothers Band performances was pulled from six live shows via the band’s Peach Records. This collection includes 36 tracks recorded between July 25 and August 10, 2003 across tour stops in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Darien Center, New York, Hartford, Charlotte and Raleigh, with no song repeated. The 2003 iteration of the Allman Brothers band – founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks plus Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, Oteil Burbridge, and Derek Truck – would prove to be the longest-running line-up and most consistent in its live performances. Guest musicians on four Cream Of The Crop 2003 songs include Susan Tedeschi, Karl Denson and Branford Marsalis. The tracks were originally recorded for the “Instant Live” CD series where the CDs were burned in real-time and fans could picked up copies of the concert immediately after the show. These shows capture the group at full throttle. For this collection, Warren Haynes serves as Supervising Producer, longtime manager Bert Holman as Executive Producer, with Bill Levenson and John Lynskey as Associate Producers. Cream of the Crop is dedicated in honor of Gregg Allman (1947 – 2017).

The Orchard 2022 Record Store Day List

Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson – The Bottom Line Archive Series: In Their Own Words: With Vin Scelsa (The Bottom Line Record Company)

Culled from an evening that also included Suzanne Vega and Victoria Williams, there was perhaps no other pairing more perfectly suited to the In Their Own Words platform than this singular meeting of Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson. As much a course in music history and songwriting as a performance, and years before VH1’s Storytellers series, Allan Pepper and Vin Sclesa’s ITOW series afforded the audience a window into the minds of their favorite songsmiths, in a run that lasted from May of 1990 until March of 2003. The two writers in question were born and raised in very different worlds – Lou Reed in the jungles of New York City and Kris Kristofferson in the heart of the Southland. Still, both men demanded total artistic freedom and created raw, brutally honest art that addressed strikingly similar issues of struggles – with loneliness and alienation, addiction and recovery, love and loss, good and evil, vulnerability and hopelessness – painfully aware of contradictions and critical of hypocrisy, painting pictures of characters known or imagined, yet always finding the humanity in our faults and weaknesses during our darkest hours. Through the lens of their music, Lou and Kris view the human condition with a sense of humility and no small amount of humor, which was always close at hand.

Maxim Mental – F*cking EP (Dine Alone Records)

Co-written and produced by GRAMMY winner and longtime collaborator Will Yip (Code Orange, Title Fight, Turnstile), enjoy debut solo EP from Max Bemis of Say Anything. Manufactured to be in high demand, this RSD First exclusive variant will be pressed on translucent pink vinyl with an etched b-side and include alternate artwork, also exclusive to this RSD First variant.

It seems fitting therefore that they should record a set of material live at Los Angeles’ Valentine studios in March 2021 especially for RSD 2022. Get ready for some of the finest psychedelic and R&B-infused garage-rock sounds around.

Night Ranger – Somewhere In California (M-Theory Audio/Postseason Records)

To commemorate the album’s 10th anniversary, enjoy the first-ever vinyl release of the acclaimed tenth album by classic rock icons Night Ranger! Somewhere In California, which earned a rare 100% rating from MelodicRock.com and led to the band’s first appearance on the Billboard Top 200 in 23 years. The ’80s hard rockers — best known for the timeless anthems “Sister Christian,” “(You Can Still) Rock In America” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” — returned to their original form with an album that measured up to the likes of the platinum classics “Midnight Madness” and “7 Wishes.” The album was the group’s first with guitarist Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and ushered in a decade that saw the band — who have sold more than 17 million records worldwide — achieve its highest visibility in years via tours with the likes of Journey, Def Leppard, Foreigner and Sammy Hagar.

The Orchard 2022 Record Store Day List

Ringo Starr – Ringo The 4th (Friday Music)

Often considered one of his best works of the late seventies, Ringo The 4th would become one of Ringo Starr’s most loved ventures. Featuring the classic singles “Drowning In The Sea Of Love” and “Wings”, Ringo The 4th truly captures the Beatles drummer and vocalist with a driving and eclectic album that continues to thrill generations of fans. Whenever Ringo Starr makes a record, there’s always ‘a little help from his (superstar) friends’ like producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, The Rascals), along with musicians the caliber of King Crimson bassist Tony Levin, the late great Luther Vandross, Bette Midler, David Bromberg, Melissa Manchester and David Foster. More classics are included like the dance floor rocker “Can She Do It Like She Dances” and a powerful version of Allen Toussaints’ “Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley”, making this another great album from this legendary rock giant. Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA, this album will also be manufactured for a very limited time for the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Translucent Orange Vinyl!

The Catatonics – Hunted Down (Southern Lord)

Besides pioneering the original 1981/1982 Syracuse Hardcore scene, the classic Hunted Down EP is considered one of the first hardcore thrash/metal crossover releases, up there with COC or DRI and remains a sought after (and pricey) collector’s item 30+ years after its release.
