Enjoy new music from Stockholm-based artist JÁNA, Canadian Rock duo cleopatrick, and a collaboration from hip-hop producer Apollo Brown and Grammy-nominated singer Raheem DeVaughn.
JÁNA – Works (Majestic Casual Records)
Stockholm-based musician Johanna Andrén, aka JÁNA, presents her second EP Works out now via Majestic Casual Records. Consisting of seven tracks, Works takes a deeper dive into JÁNA’s psyche, as she continues to learn more about herself as a songwriter and a human being in the process. The new EP features collaborations from members of Little Dragon, as well as bassist Ben Reed, known for his work on Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Endless. JÁNA, funnily enough, finds great inspiration from Frank. “I’m really inspired by Frank Ocean’s way of writing which means songs have many interpretations depending on which way the receiver looks at it.” Listen to Works out now on all streaming platforms.
cleopatrick – BUMMER (Nowhere Special Recordings)
Ian Fraser and Luke Gruntz were inseparable as kids growing up in Cobourg, Ontario. In their own coming-of-age story, they formed the musical project cleopatrick. Ironically enough, the rock duo found success with their 2017 song “hometown” which, according to Gruntz, is “a song about people probably never hearing our songs.” After years of single and EP releases, multiple sold-out tours in Canada, the US, and the UK/EU, appearances at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Reading/Leeds, and DSP playlist placements, cleopatrick presents their debut album, BUMMER. “We’ve been comparing the album to the Voyager One probe,” says Gruntz. “It has everything about us in it and we don’t know if people will get it or if people will care, but it feels so good to have it out there. It feels like a small way to live forever.”
Raheem DeVaughn & Apollo Brown – Lovesick (Mello Music Group)
3X Grammy-nominated singer Raheem DeVaughn and legendary hip-hop producer Apollo Brown team up on the new album Lovesick, out now via Mello Music Group. The new record is a blend of modern R&B, classic soul, and guttural funk that recalls Smokey Robinson, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye. While the production may seem like it sonically comes out of left field for a producer like Apollo Brown who’s known for more grime hip-hop, it’s not as much of a shock when you consider the soulful and groove-based songs he’s been sampling for years. Enjoy the soulful 12-track album from Raheem DeVaughn & Apollo Brown now.
