NOVEMBER 10tH, 2008

In this issue:

featured artists, free tracks, new videos, behind the scenes, in stores now, coming soon

Introduction

The year is winding down, but the metal just doesn’t stop in the latest edition of the OMN. This time out, we’re thrilled to highlight two of our personal favorite releases of 2008. Floridian prog-metal forefathers Cynic offer up their first release in a decade and a half in the form of Traced In Air. The physical release isn’t coming until later this year, but you can snag a digital copy now. Go ahead. And in case all out prog assaults aren't exactly your thing, how about a split release featuring New Brunswick hardcore titans Thursday, and some face-melting awesomeness from Japanese decibel-lovers Envy? That’s right, our friends at Temporary Residence have pulled together both on an impossibly brilliant twofer.

Elsewhere in the OMN, we’ve got tracks from both of the above releases, music from the recently-unveiled Sonic Syndicate slayer, and some choice barn burners from Bloodbath, Deadlock, and plenty more. Nuclear Blast offers up two new videos – one from Sonic Syndicate and another from Scar Symmetry – while we also take a look into the studio with Darkthrone and Cynic. And don’t forget to check out our current and forthcoming releases in the In Stores Now and Coming Soon sections.

Until next time…

Featured Artists

Cynic

Traced In Air

[Season of Mist]

Release Date: Oct 28

Reunited progressive metallurgists Cynic — the Floridian forefathers of tech-minded prog metal, and the proud parents of 1993’s landmark Focus — unveiedl their first album in 15 years on October 28th. Due via French powerhouse Season of Mist, Traced In Air is an eight song tour de force of twisted time-signatures, mind-bending riffs and all-out metal indulgence, building upon the groundwork laid out by the formidable Focus while fortifying and updating a genre the band practically willed into existence a decade and a half ago. Recorded in California with Down knob-twiddler Warren Riker, the current line-up features founding members Paul Masvidal (guitars/clean vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums) along with Sean Malone (bass), and newcomer Tymon Kruidenier (guitars/growls)..

Thursday/Envy

Split

[Temporary Residence]

Release Date: Nov 4

More than two years after New Brunswick hardcore titans Thursday first put the idea in their heads, Temporary Residence Ltd. is proud to finally bring together two influential bands from two very different places – Thursday and Japanese metal monolith Envy. Recorded in Spring 2008, both bands turn in some of their most inspired work yet. In addition, Thursday invited Anthony Molina of Mercury Rev to remix the dark instrumental “In Silence” into the pitch-black closing track, “Appeared And Was Gone,” providing the perfect transition into the massive dynamics of Envy. Beginning with the subtle electronics of the symphonic opener, “An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction,” Envy thrashes and burns through a trio of thoughtful face-melters.

Behind the Scenes

Video Darkthrone | Studio Video
It's hard not to love Darkthrone, what with their massive plumes of black smoke riffs and general doomy dominance. But when the dudes allow a camera into the studio, our faith and adoration is completely vindicated. Check out this clip for some footage of the guys noodling around and chatting about their tunes.

Video Cynic | Album Preview & Interview
In the run up to their first album in fifteen years, a reuinited Cynic allowed a camera crew to document their recording process. A snippet of the result is available here, complete with interviews with the band, snippets of songs, and plenty more. Check it out now for everything you wanted to know about these Floridian prog-metaloids' new album, but were afraid to ask.
