Introduction |
|
Welcome to the newest sparkly summer edition of the Orchard's Daily Rind Newsletter (we're just going to pretend it hasn't been raining for 40 days and 40 nights). This week we present your perfect summer soundtrack - the Generationals' upbeat indie-pop album Con Law, along with more feel-good tunes from Brooklyn's dancehaller Sean Bones. In our free tracks section, we've got "Fables" from the highly-anticipated Dodos' album, Time To Die, a sugary song by British sweetheart Bird and some banging Hip Hop by Trife Diesel (aka Trife Da God), Cage and DJ Spinna. Bubbling Up features pop-punk quartet Oh Romeo!, the second album from Toronto's Lullabye Arkestra, and Life as a Shorty by much talked about west-coast MC Fashawn. And just like every week, you can find a lot more In Stores Now and Coming Soon, including David Mead, The Bloody Beetroots and Sally Shapiro. Enjoy!

New Orleans indie pop duo Generationals released their debut LP, Con Law, this week via Park The Van Records. The album - a bouquet of brass-y soul, synth pop bounce and straight forward indie pop - is currently streaming in full at AOL Spinner. Filter Magazine lauds the record for spanning "five generations of music, channeling everything from Tom Petty to Roxy Music," while Pitchfork praises the duo for sounding "bright and enraptured in life's simple joys."
Currently, bandleaders Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer are taking this genre-jumping, sunshine-y show on the road, supporting Con Law with a tour that stretches into next month and beyond, and finds labelmate Floating Action coming along for the ride. This summer the ascendant indie poppers have already shared stages with Bowerbirds and Plants and Animals, and have fast accumulated spins on stations like KCRW, WXPN, and KEXP. This Saturday, as their tour hits full tilt, the band'll be stopping by KEXP for a performance, streaming online at www.kexp.org starting at 3:30pm PST. |

Recorded by Jon Spencer knob-minder, Jay Braun, RINGS runs the gamut from sturdy rocksteady grooves to sly Spector-esque pop; Afrobeat bounce to reggaeton, disco, and so much more. And of course, there's the Norah Jones connection. Sullivan spent last summer in Jamaica shooting a film opposite the Grammy award winner. Wah Do Dem - patois for "What They Do" - premiered last month at the LA Film Festival, and served as the launching pad for a musical relationship between Sullivan and Jones, who contributes to RINGS' gorgeous album-closer "Turn Them." Find his summer anthem "Dancehall" below.
Sean Bones will be playing select dates through the Northeast all summer long with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. But if you just can't wait for the compressive canvassing of the lower 48, the folks at Baeble Music have you covered. Their cameras recently caught a sweltering set - filled with songs from the Reggae-popping RINGS. You can catch the entire performance, along with a Bones interview, at the link below. |
