Introduction |
 |
Welcome to our first newsletter of the spring! Only thing is, did someone forget to send spring the memo that it was supposed to show up on Friday? Really. Everyone's back from SXSW, nursing their sunburns, and all of a sudden we have to wear scarves again? It's a good thing Harlem Shakes just released their sizzling debut, Technicolor Health, to get our hips moving. We can also snuggle up in the anthemic post rock embrace of MONO's fifth masterpiece, Hymn To The Immortal Wind, while we hide from the wind outside. In our free tracks section, we've got Winter Gloves for you in the form of this bouncy Montreal quartet, and hot club number (number 1 in their native Denmark, in fact) "Feed The Horse" from lesbian-grime-punks Fagget Fairys. Check out some smokin' dance moves in Chin Chin's "Go There With You" video, directed by Brody Baker (of Animal Collective's "My Girls" fame), and in the ragga party starter from Bragga Dat. Bubbling Up features buzzy Seattle duo Common Market, the Belgian guy who turned "Ayo Technology" into a sappy acoustic YouTube hit, and indie supergroup Sway Machinery, featuring members of Balkan Beat Box, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Arcade Fire. And as always, there's lots more In Stores Now and Coming Soon!

Brooklyn indie darlings Harlem Shakes realeased their debut LP, Technicolor Health, this week courtesy of New York’s Gigantic Records. The full-length follows the Shakes’ inimitable, self-released 2007 EP, Burning Birthdays, which earned generous praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, SPIN, The Village Voice, and a host of blogs. Pitchfork admired the band’s “frenetic clip of hooks,” and sometime Magnetic Field-er LD Beghtol of The Voice called them “lethally charming” and one of “the Best of New York.”
After supporting the EP on the back of tours with Deerhoof, Vampire Weekend, and Beirut, the band entered the studio with Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen, Passion Pit) to record what would become Technicolor Health. The result is one of the most quietly ambitious pop albums in ages. Much like Blur fused English pop traditions and contemporary sonics to forge Brit Pop, Harlem Shakes meld the Great American Songbook with unmistakably contemporary textures, creating what one might call "Am Pop." The upbeat “Strictly Game” is available for download below.

Japanese experimental icons MONO are now celebrating the release of Hymn To The Immortal Wind, their fifth and most expansive album to date. Brought to us via Temporary Residence, the album finds the band effortlessly soaring through melodies both sincere in approach and grandiose in scale, all with the aid of a full 28-piece chamber orchestra. Their first release since 2006’s landmark You Are There, MONO finds themselves raising the stakes yet again, steering their unmistakable cascade of sound into a dense world of strings, flute, organ, piano, tympani and more.
Recorded and mixed by Steve Albini in June and November 2008 at his Electrical Audio Recording studio in Chicago, IL, the resulting seven songs will be delivered on the brink of MONO’s 10th anniversary as a group. To celebrate, the four-piece are planning two very special performances in New York City. Welcoming another twenty-three pieces to their arsenal, the band will be backed by the Wordless Music Orchestra for a celebration of their past accomplishments and the newly minted beast that is Hymn to the Immortal Wind. The two evenings, May 8th and 9th, hosted by The New York Society for Ethical Culture and Le Poisson Rouge respectively will mark the ONLY North American dates in support of their new LP and will undoubtedly be evenings to remember. Hear a preview of the majestic “Follow The Map” below.
