Introduction |
 |
It's hard to believe that we're nearing the end of July already. Before we know it, we'll be talking about The Walkmen and Amy Ray having had some of the best releases of 2008. In that same list, we'll mention Fate, the amazing third studio album by Dr. Dog, and Pas/Cal's very first long player, which is hard to believe considering the impressive string of tastemaker-loved EPs that have led up to this point. But enough looking ahead, the summer's not over yet! We have free tracks from That Handsome Devil and Backyard Tire Fire to download! Sam Champion and Bloodsugars videos to watch! Not to mention a long-awaited new EP from Her Space Holiday and Takka Takka's sophomore effort Migration right around the corner. So as you sit outside with your laptop enjoying the heat (or hide indoors with the AC), be sure to check out our In Stores Now section for plenty of summer soundtrack-worthy listening material, and as always, don't forget to check out The Daily Rind for more articles, MP3s, and videos that we can't fit in here.

Fate
[Park the Van]
Release Date: July 22

Dr. Dog are more than just Philly faves these days. Since releasing We All Belong in early 2007, the five piece are loved coast to coast and have caught the eyes and ears of MTV, Billboard, Pitchfork, The Fader, Spin Magazine, and LA Times just to name a few. The band also made an appearance on Conan O’ Brien last Thursday. Now new album Fate, out today on Park the Van Records, is poised to propel the Dr. Dog (summer of) love fest even further.
Yahoo Music has tapped the group for their User’s Choice feature – a competition throwing four up and coming bands into the pit and giving fans the authority to decide which is crowned “Who’s Next” winner of the month. Click here to vote for the Dog. You can also stream all of Fate on AOL Spinner right now before you buy it, but if you don't want to miss out on the two bonus tracks and video for "From," make sure to buy it on iTunes as well.

Pas/Cal
I Was Raised On Matthew, Mark, Luke & Laura
[Le Grand Magistery]
Release Date: July 22

 |
After a seemingly-endless string of 12-inches and EPs, Detroit indie pop alchemists PAS/CAL finally take their full-length bow today with I Was Raised on Matthew, Mark, Luke & Laura. Continuing in the tradition of Dear Sir EP, Oh Honey, We’re Ridiculous EP, and The Handbag Memoirs EP, mastermind/namesake Casimer Pascal and company have created a sugar-sweet, falsetto-obsessed long-player that tip toes from blissed-out twee to sprawling psych-pop and everything in between. The lead leak from the album, “You Were Too Old For Me,” has already earned a boatload of praise.
PAS/CAL also premiered a second song from the album, "Glorious Ballad of the Ignored," on Stereogum's 'Gum Drop, leading up to a Free MP3 of the Day on AOL Spinner. Hear it for yourself below.
